Japanese PFD Cotton 250gsm

Composition: 98% Cotton 2% Spandex

Width: 138cm

These lengths are PFD cotton from Japan. PFD means prepared for dye. This cloth is a stretch pant weight twill. Perfect for testing out your pant pattern!!

So what does PFD mean? Natural cotton, after weaving and washing, is an off-white color like a light shade of ecru or cream. Normally, if the fabric is to be dyed, it goes straight to the dyer at that point. If it is to be sold as bleached fabric or made into "white" clothing, it is first bleached, washed, then often treated with optic whiteners and washed again. Optic whiteners are kind of like a white dye. While technically there is no such thing as a "white" dye, the optic whiteners occupy on a molecular level, the same spaces as dyes do. Therefore, natural, unbleached fabrics are said to take dyes better than "white" or optically whitened fabric.

This fabric is perfect for Toiling your garments! Toiling is basically the practice run for your final garment. You make it up in a similar weight, inexpensive, fabric to give you an idea of how the finished item will look and how it will fit you. Usually made in calico. It also gives you a practice with the construction of the garment so when you sew the final one you have a better idea of how it all fits together.
